NEW CAPTAIN ROMERO AFTER MESSI IN ARGENTINA NATIONAL TEAM

A historical flag change takes place in the Argentina National Football Team. Head Coach Lionel Scaloni officially announced who will wear the captain's armband after Lionel Messi ends his legendary national team career. Speaking before the friendly matches to be played against Bolivia, Burkina Faso, and Benin, the successful coach pointed out Cristian Romero as the new leader of the team. This decision represents the beginning of a new era for the world champion Argentina. Scaloni explained the hierarchy within the team and why the 28-year-old defender is the most correct name for this role to the press members. The coach expressed his trust in his player by saying, "The captain will be Cuti. He was already the 3rd captain after Leo and Ota. Emiliano or Lautaro can also wear it, but the right name is Cuti." While the football world prepares for Messi's farewell moment, Scaloni took a quick step to ensure a smooth transition within the team. Even though this official confirmation is a new milestone, Romero is no stranger to the captain's armband. The successful stopper previously captained the team in 3 separate situations where senior leaders were not on the pitch. Romero first wore the armband in the critical 1-0 victory against Chile in the South American Qualifiers in 2025. Following this match, he led his team in the friendly match against Venezuela in October and in the 2-1 victory against Mauritania before the 2026 World Cup. Argentina fans hope to set sail for new successes under Cuti's leadership.
