Hold tight: Atletico Madrid's official X (Twitter) account drove social media wild on Friday May 29 with two posts in which they stole Fabrizio Romano's iconic transfer formula and showed Barcelona's two stars Pedri and Lamine Yamal in the rojiblanco kit, generated by AI. The images released under the "BREAKING - HERE WE GO!" banner were instantly mistaken for real transfer news and pushed onto millions of timelines. But the whole thing was a Bad Bunny concert ticket joke.
Atletico had first tightened the atmosphere about an hour earlier by announcing they would publish "a statement about disinformation" — that tweet with 1.3 million views shows how expectations went through the roof. Then they posted the AI-generated images of Pedri and Lamine Yamal wearing Atleti shirts back-to-back, branded with "BREAKING - HERE WE GO!" Under the Pedri image, they explained the real story with this sentence: "HERE WE GO! For this second offer we've had a problem, we've run out of tickets for tomorrow's concert, so we improve the previous proposal with 6 for the one on Sunday."
The joke concept opened up: Atletico was acting as if it was inviting Barcelona players to the 10-concert Bad Bunny residency at Riyadh Air Metropolitano from May 30 Saturday to June 15. At Barcelona's home Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, only 2 concerts were held on May 22 and 23 — on those two nights Lamine Yamal was seen at the VIP "La Casita" area with his girlfriend Inés García, alongside the Barcelona squad including Lewandowski, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Pedri, Cubarsí, and Ferran Torres.
Here's the heavyweight stone at the core of the troll: "You had only 2 nights while we have 10 — even your stars come to us for tickets." Atletico imitated Romano's style and simultaneously made fun of transfer rumors and longtime rival Barcelona.
Engagement numbers also reveal the magnitude of the moment: The AI Lamine Yamal image received 15,800 likes, 11,000 retweets, 5,200 comments, 1.3 million views. This time Atletico's brand team targeted not Real Madrid, but Barcelona. Furthermore, the Bad Bunny residency starts on May 30 — that is, the first concert is the day right after the news was published.
Another layer to the story: At the Barcelona concerts, a fan complained about paying 500 euros and not being able to see the stage, and the organizer responded with "he chose to be in that position." The irony in Atletico's 6-ticket offer also overlaps with this story: "In Madrid both tickets are abundant and the stage is visible."
In conclusion, this post can be shown as one of the most successful examples in recent years of club official social media accounts in terms of brand personality. Atletico gave a lesson with a single AI troll, simultaneously processing Fabrizio Romano, longtime rival Barcelona, and the viral AI meme culture all at once.
