BREAKING — According to Fabrizio Romano's exclusive report today, Dutch manager Arne Slot and Liverpool have parted ways with immediate effect following the end-of-season review. In the news he conveyed with the phrase "story over", Romano highlighted Basque manager Andoni Iraola, who left Bournemouth, as the clear favorite to take over.
This separation marks the end of the story of a manager who, just 12 months ago, lifted the 20th Premier League title and ushered in Anfield's "post-Klopp era". Brought to Liverpool's head coach position in the summer of 2024 as the nine-year Klopp era closed, Slot was acquired from Feyenoord with a £9.4 million compensation fee and signed a three-year contract (until 2027). At Feyenoord he had lifted the 2022-23 Eredivisie title, won the 2023-24 KNVB Cup, and reached the UEFA Conference League final. The Dutch manager, with his modern positional play understanding and data-driven school philosophy, was seen as the natural evolution of Klopp's "heavy metal" football era.
His first season was dreamlike. Slot, with the squad he inherited from Klopp, closed the 2024-25 Premier League season with Liverpool's 20th league title; this was the club's first league title since 2019-20 and meant the first Premier League being lifted with Liverpool by a manager other than Klopp. Slot's win rate over 60 percent sat near Klopp's 62 percent career average from 491 matches. Mohamed Salah's spending one of the brightest goal-contribution seasons of his career, the stabilization of the Virgil van Dijk-led defense, and the rise of young stars like Conor Bradley and Harvey Elliott took place under the Dutchman's brand. Liverpool also reached the Carabao Cup final and made it to the Champions League round of 16.
Unfortunately, the second season turned into a complete nightmare. Liverpool, who spent over the club record £440 million in the summer transfer window on stars like Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, ended the 2025-26 Premier League season in 5th place, watching from a distance as Arsenal lifted the cup after 22 years. The season opened a dark page in Liverpool history too: for the first time since Rafa Benitez they suffered 18 league defeats. They finished 11th in the Champions League league phase and were eliminated by PSG in the round of 16; they were dismissed from the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in early rounds. Against top-half teams, only 2 of 24 possible points were collected away from home. The 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad and the 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park were turning points.
The most devastating dimension of this season was the tension within the dressing room. After the Aston Villa defeat, Mohamed Salah called on social media for a "return to Klopp's heavy metal football", and most of the players supported the Egyptian star's posts with likes. Salah subsequently announced his departure from the club; Ibrahima Konate left as a free agent without extending his contract, Trent Alexander-Arnold had already departed, and Andy Robertson transferred to Tottenham. The Anfield stands filled with boos throughout matches, Slot's removal of young forward Rio Ngumoha enraged fans. Style criticisms were branded with the "uninspiring" label, and the crisis with ten players' injuries made the picture even worse.
The result of the all-club review at the end of the season was separation. Slot's remaining 18-month contract will need to be terminated with compensation. Clear favorite to replace him is the 43-year-old Andoni Iraola; the Basque manager who took Bournemouth to 6th in the Premier League and to European competition for the first time had announced his departure as a free agent at the end of the season and turned down Crystal Palace and AC Milan offers while waiting for Liverpool. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes was the one who appointed Iraola to Bournemouth, and the closeness between the two was decisive in FSG's preference. Iraola's modern, aggressive style that gives space to youth opens the door for a new "post-Klopp" philosophy at Anfield.
