Another name was written in Polish tennis history on Court Philippe-Chatrier on Monday afternoon. Maja Chwalinska, the Polish tennis player who came to Paris at age 24, world ranking 114, left-handed and as a qualifier, defeated Diane Parry, the last representative on France's women's side, 6-3, 6-2. It was a clear victory of 1 hour 33 minutes; and at the same time, her career's first Grand Slam quarter-final.
Chwalinska's Paris journey had started in the qualifying rounds of the tournament. Even entering the main draw was her initial goal. But the player who won five of six matches in straight sets, has written her own history by defeating Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, 23rd seed Elise Mertens, and Maria Sakkari in turn. She had won the third-round match against Sakkari 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 (on Saturday); a qualifier reaching the 3rd round on that day was already remarkable. When she took the court on Monday, she became the only name in Polish tennis to advance to the quarter-final at the 2026 Roland Garros.
The match was balanced in the first minutes, but Chwalinska quickly caught the rhythm. The long-angled shots created by her left hand caused difficult moments for the French player; she took the first set 6-3. In the second set, Parry quickly fell to 0-3 down and couldn't recover. Chwalinska was a player who had won only 6 matches at main tour events since the beginning of this year. She had won the 2024 Porto Open and Montpellier, also pocketed the 2026 Oeiras — one of the familiar names of the ITF circuit. But she had never seen even a 4th round in the Grand Slam calendar. On Monday this door opened forever.
Chwalinska's victory also brought Polish tennis to a historic point. Along with Iga Swiatek, they became the first two Poles to advance to the 4th round at Roland Garros in the same year (Swiatek had been eliminated by Marta Kostyuk on Sunday). Two Polish players being in the 4th round at the same Grand Slam has only happened three times in total: 2008 AO Domachowska-Radwanska, 2023 AO Linette-Swiatek, and now 2026 RG Chwalinska-Swiatek. But two Poles advancing to QF in a single Grand Slam year has yet to happen; although Swiatek couldn't pass her hurdle against Kostyuk this season, Chwalinska is Poland's only representative in the quarter-final.
Chwalinska will face 8th seed Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-final. The young Russian beat Jil Teichmann 6-3, 6-2 on Monday to reach her third consecutive RG QF. This will be the toughest test of the season for Chwalinska; but in a half-table containing Andreeva-Cirstea-Kalinskaya-Kostyuk, the chance for the Polish qualifier to advance to the semi-final is not far at all. A paradigm shift is already happening on the women's side of Roland Garros 2026: Gauff, Swiatek, Rybakina have all been eliminated. Now the stage is open for qualifiers.
The narrative on the WTA side also reflects this. Chwalinska's words after the Sakkari match "It's very new for me, the stage. I've never really been in the third round in a Grand Slam, and I'm in the fourth round right now. Coming from quallies, I obviously didn't well expect to be in this position" show the player's awareness of her own distance. After Monday, the time for comment has been postponed to the quarter-final. The Polish press is also evaluating Chwalinska as "the new story of Polish tennis in 2026."
To summarise in a paragraph: After consuming big names one by one this season, Roland Garros opened its door to a qualifier Polish left-handed player. Chwalinska's story has already turned into one of the major side roads of Roland Garros 2026; the result she will get against Andreeva will perhaps also determine the final act of this tale.
