A development that could shape the NBA summer has arrived. Golden State Warriors veteran forward Draymond Green has decided to decline the $27.7 million player option in his contract and is now technically a free agent.
The move is not expected to signal a departure. According to what has been reported, the 36-year-old star is expected to re-sign with the Warriors on a new multiyear deal carrying a lower 2026-27 salary than he would have earned by opting in. Behind Green's step lies his club's roster planning.
Declining the option gives Golden State significant financial flexibility. With this move, the Warriors create the room to use the non-taxpayer mid-level exception to sign their main free-agent target, LeBron James. Among the scenarios being discussed is that the club will also attempt to trade Jimmy Butler for Anthony Davis — long a teammate of James — in order to lure James to the Bay. Green opting out helps put that plan into motion.
One of the cornerstones of the Warriors' defensive identity since he entered the league, Green holds career averages of 8.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.3 steals. The future of the four-time champion will in all likelihood be shaped at Golden State once again; however, the official steps and the outcome of the club's other targeted moves will become clearer in the coming days.
