Another bomb was added to one of the busiest days of the European transfer market. Fabrizio Romano announced at 15:43 on Tuesday with the message he shared from X that Real Madrid and Inter reached an agreement for Denzel Dumfries: "🚨💣 EXCLUSIVE: Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid, HERE WE GO!" According to Romano's statement, the Spanish club will trigger the 20 million Euros release clause in Dumfries's contract this summer. The Dutch right-back also accepted Real Madrid; the deal was completed Tuesday night, formal steps are expected to be taken in the next few days.
There are several important factors behind the scenes of this transfer. First, Dani Carvajal's departure from Real Madrid — Carvajal, who was Madrid's right-back for long years, ended his contract and the team was looking for a new right-back. Second, Trent Alexander-Arnold's first season at Madrid (2025-26) falling short of expectations: rotation for a right-back who can be pulled into midfield was not enough for the team. Third, José Mourinho being about to take the head of Real Madrid for the 2nd time — for Mourinho's defence-oriented game understanding, a right-back profile that can provide physical strength, speed and attacking contribution was critical. Dumfries sits right in the middle of this picture.
What is interesting is, Liverpool also wanted the same player. According to TEAMtalk's news on May 19, Dumfries's representatives were actively pushing for a Liverpool transfer. But Arne Slot's dismissal from Liverpool on May 30 and Andoni Iraola's arrival at Anfield led to the picture changing; Iraola wanted a different type of right-back. Real Madrid entered through this opening door, established direct contact with the player's circle for Dumfries, and planned to trigger the release clause without involving Inter. The result came out with Romano's "Here We Go!" signal.
Dumfries's career story is interesting and a steep journey. Born on April 18, 1996 in Rotterdam — a Dutch family of Surinamese roots. He started his professional career in 2014 at Sparta Rotterdam; three seasons later he moved to Heerenveen (2017-18). His star began to shine with his transfer to PSV Eindhoven (2018, 5.5 million Euros). At PSV, for three seasons he became one of Dutch football's most powerful wingers. Inter Milan transferred him from Eindhoven for 14.3 million Euros in the summer of 2021.
The 5 seasons he spent at Inter were full of trophies for Dumfries. In this period, he experienced 2 Serie A championships (2023-24, 2024-25), 3 Coppa Italia, 3 Italian Super Cups and two Champions League finals (2023 lost 1-0 to Manchester City, 2025 lost 5-0 to PSG). He became the 11th Dutchman to wear the jersey in Inter's history. In his career, he produced a total of 498 official matches, 60 goals and 57 assists — quite impressive attacking contribution figures for a right-back. He was one of the stars of Netherlands' EURO 2020 campaign (the Netherlands scored 2 goals, was chosen as the best player). He was also in the EURO 2024 and 2026 FIFA World Cup squads. Now he has scored 6 goals in his 71-match Netherlands National Team career.
The 2025-26 season was a difficult year full of injuries for Dumfries. Thigh injury in March 2025, thigh injury again in June, ankle injury extending from November to February caused him to miss much of the season. For this reason, he could play only 20 matches in Serie A, scored 3 goals. Despite this, the performance he gave when he recovered was enough to attract Real Madrid's attention — especially the contributions he made in recent months in Inter shirt to victories like 2-0 against Lazio, 3-0 against Fiorentina were noteworthy. Being 1.88m tall physically, his sprint power and his effectiveness in the air draws an ideal right-back profile for Mourinho's Madrid.
On the Madrid side, the acquisition of Dumfries is a serious investment move at the beginning of the season. After Trent Alexander-Arnold was brought from Liverpool for free last summer and the English player performed below expectations during the season, he will be a different alternative to Mourinho's new system. Alternatives like Pedro Porro (Tottenham) and Ivan Fresneda (Sporting CP) were also on the list; however, Dumfries's experience, having seen Champions League finals and reasonable price gave him the advantage. Tottenham was demanding 40 million Euros for Porro, Real Madrid preferred a more calculated move. For 20 million Euros, it added one of the key players of the Netherlands World Cup squad to its squad.
As a result, Dumfries also became an answer in the competition between Liverpool and Bayern Munich's star transfers. On the Inter side, the loss of a star right-back is a matter to be taken into consideration. While Cristian Chivu's rejuvenation plan already had a strategy of gradually parting with players approaching older age, Dumfries's departure for 20 million Euros is also seen as reasonable from a budget planning perspective. Inter will now be searching for a young right-back to replace him. While the official announcement is expected in the next 24-48 hours, Dumfries will also join the Netherlands National Team's 2026 World Cup camp as a Real Madrid player.
