One of the NBA's longest-running contract negotiations of the summer window remains unresolved. According to Kelly Iko, Jalen Duren still wants the max five-year, $287 million contract from the Detroit Pistons. Iko offered the following assessment: "We're talking about a multi-million dollar difference in valuation between player and organization — this could take a while."
This standoff has also been confirmed by another source. Speaking on ESPN's NBA Today, fellow NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill stated that Duren wants a deal closer to the $287 million maximum he became eligible for after making the All-NBA Third Team, while the Pistons are seeking what Goodwill described as a "more palatable" agreement.
On-court performance is also part of why the negotiations have become complicated. According to a report from The Athletic's Fred Katz, Duren's disappointing playoff showing — averaging just 9.9 points and 7.6 rebounds in the conference semifinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers — has complicated the talks; it is reported that the Pistons haven't even offered Duren their standard 25% max (worth $239.2 million over five years), avoiding even the 25% max deal his 2022 draft classmates Paolo Banchero and Chet Holmgren signed last summer.
The broader market sentiment is also notable. According to Katz's poll of 13 rival team executives, six said they would offer Duren a five-year deal in the $180-230 million range, while the other seven were more cautious about his earning potential.
There are also structural factors strengthening the Pistons' position. The club's right of first refusal, combined with the fact that no team currently has the cap space to make Duren a competitive offer sheet, gives Detroit significant leverage in the negotiations.
The player's profile and alternatives also enrich this file. The 22-year-old centre, who was the second-best player on last season's 60-win top seed in the Eastern Conference and earned his first NBA All-Star selection, is also reported to have held talks with the Los Angeles Lakers, whose offer averages around $30 million annually; Duren is also said to have the option of accepting his one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer and testing unrestricted free agency next summer.
