One of Istanbul's most exciting basketball nights will be experienced on Wednesday evening. In the second match of the Türkiye Sigorta Basketball Super League semi-final series, Fenerbahçe Beko will host Anadolu Efes at Ülker Sports and Event Hall. The yellow-and-navy team had defeated Anadolu Efes 60-59 with a historic comeback in the first match played on Monday night and had taken a 1-0 lead in the series. There was a dramatic moment in the anatomy of the match: at the moment Efes was 18 points ahead, Fenerbahçe Beko had allowed its opponent to score only 5 points in the last quarter with an incredible defensive performance. The critical contributions of Khem Birch, Wade Baldwin and Errick McCollum at critical moments had brought the Ülker stands to their feet.
Now the yellow-and-navy team is in pursuit of 2-0 superiority. In classic playoff mathematics, the home team winning the first two matches largely determines the series. In the best-of-five semi-final format, teams that are 2-0 ahead have a high probability of completing the series; throughout history in BSL, about 85% of teams in this situation have reached the final. Fenerbahçe Beko won its last championship in the 2024-25 season (Khem Birch was finals MVP) and now is one of the most successful clubs of the league with 12 BSL championships. This season they completed the regular season at the top and passed Safiport Erokspor 2-0 (94-72, 96-73) in the quarter-final. They came to the semi-final with a strong lineup.
On the Anadolu Efes side, the story is different. The navy-blue team finished the regular season in 4th place — a clear decline compared to last season. While beating Türk Telekom 2-0 (86-75, 77-70) in the quarter-final and coming to the semi-final, losing the first match was a psychological blow for the series. Especially the collapse in the last quarter — 10 minutes passed with only 5 points — is a possible warning signal for the team. Star players like Tofiq Lardner and Vasilije Micic are expected to start more aggressively in the second match. Efes has won the EuroLeague twice in recent years and won 16 titles in BSL; they know how to recover from such losses.
The historical rivalry between the two clubs is also quite deep-rooted. Fenerbahçe Beko and Anadolu Efes have met 6 times in BSL playoffs in the last 10 years; Fenerbahçe won 4 of these matchups. In the 2018-19 final series, Efes had taken the championship with a 4-3 superiority (Shane Larkin Finals MVP); but in subsequent years, Fenerbahçe generally came out superior. In the last 5 years, Fenerbahçe Beko's BSL championship count is 4 — the yellow-and-navy team is considered the dominant force of the league. Losing to Olympiakos at the EuroLeague Final Four on May 22 had created a motivation loss before the semi-finals; but the Game 1 victory made this somewhat forgotten.
The second match, which will start at 20:30 on Wednesday evening, will be broadcast live on BeIN Sports 4. If Fenerbahçe Beko catches a 2-0 superiority, the series will move to Bursa Hayri Terzioğlu Sports Hall — this is the arena where the 3rd and 4th matches will be played, where Anadolu Efes will use its home court advantage. In the other semi-final, Beşiktaş GAİN defeated Bahçeşehir Koleji 82-79 on Tuesday night and took a 1-0 lead. Possible final: Fenerbahçe-Beşiktaş Istanbul derby (Beşiktaş has a 14-year championship drought, the last Fenerbahçe vs Beşiktaş final was in the 2024-25 season, Fenerbahçe won 4-1). How the morale of Tuesday's matches will reflect on the latter parts of both semi-finals — Wednesday evening's scoreboard will give a clearer picture.
