Madrid was shaken on Wednesday evening by a new transfer-politics bomb. Real Madrid's current president Florentino Perez played his biggest campaign card before the presidential election on June 7: José Mourinho. In the short video shared from the official election account @Florentino2026_, the Portuguese coach appeared with the Real Madrid shirt and gave a simple but devastating "Sí" (Yes) response. The video included the campaign's striking slogan "MOUcha Historia por Hacer" — containing the wordplay made with Mourinho's name: "Much History to Make".
According to news based on The Athletic's David Ornstein, Mourinho has actually signed his contract with Real Madrid weeks ago. The 63-year-old Portuguese coach will officially take office if Florentino Perez wins the election. The contract period is until June 2029 — that is, 3 years. Mourinho was previously at the head of Real Madrid between 2010-2013, won the 2011-12 La Liga championship and the 2010-11 Copa del Rey. In La Liga that season he was champion with a record 100 points — it is still remembered as Real Madrid's best season in history.
Mourinho's departure also progresses in parallel with another story from the Benfica side. The Portuguese coach had started the season at Benfica in September 2025 in place of Bruno Lage. As we published the news in recent months, Marco Silva had taken Mourinho's place from Fulham to head Benfica — this door was kept open precisely for Mourinho's return to Madrid. According to ESPN's news on May 18, Real Madrid paid Benfica approximately 28 million Euros in transfer fee. This transfer process had begun with the activation of the secret "exit clause" in Mourinho's Lisbon contract at the end of May.
Florentino Perez's move in the election campaign broke the 20-year silence in Real Madrid's presidency. The 79-year-old Perez called for new elections at the board meeting on May 12 — as he did not want to bear the heavy bill of finishing the season without trophy (Champions League, La Liga, Copa del Rey, Super Cup none won) and Barcelona winning La Liga right at Santiago Bernabéu. Although Perez has been at the head of Real Madrid since 2000 and has won 37 cups, the failure of the last season seriously gathered fan reaction. He entered a search for "re-legitimisation" with this step.
Mourinho's return to Real Madrid also created great activity on the transfer front. Florentino Perez's management has already prepared two big reinforcements: right-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter (20 million Euros release clause triggered, Romano made the "Here We Go" announcement) and centre-back Ibrahima Konaté from Liverpool (his contract ends on June 30, coming as a free transfer). These two signings show Florentino's renewal plan in the defensive line of his election campaign. The expiry of David Alaba and Dani Carvajal's contracts created big gaps in defence; Perez is focused on filling these gaps. The Konaté transfer was also officialised on Wednesday with a campaign video as a response to Riquelme's Haaland-Rodri bomb.
Expectations for Mourinho's second Real Madrid period are big. In the 2025-26 season, after the failure of the young head coach who came from Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso management, the search for an experienced and "big club accustomed" name was already being discussed in the media. Mourinho's past successes at Inter (2010 Treble), Chelsea (3 Premier Leagues), Manchester United (Europa League) and Real Madrid make him an ideal profile for Florentino's "experience-focused renewal" project. The 63-year-old coach, who has won 26 big cups in his career, is also a familiar profile in media management off the pitch for the Real Madrid community.
Sunday's election will be the most exciting internal political moment of Real Madrid in the last 20 years. Florentino Perez's message of experience and stability will clash with Riquelme's message of innovation like the Haaland-Rodri promise. Although Mourinho's name gives Florentino a clear advantage, Riquelme's notary-guaranteed double transfer promise could easily convince voters too. The 79-year-old Perez has been the only candidate in his last elections (2013, 2017, 2021) but this time Riquelme's challenge changed everything. Voting will start at 09:00 at the basketball hall in Real Madrid City on Sunday and close at 20:00. Results will be clear the same night.
