A striking development has emerged in Fulham's manager search. According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, the Premier League side has opened talks with Álvaro Arbeloa, who recently left Real Madrid, regarding the head coach role. The 43-year-old Spanish manager has become the clear favourite in betting markets with a 44 percent implied probability.

The process unfolded as a chain reaction. Marco Silva, who spent five years at Craven Cottage, departed for Lisbon as Benfica's new manager. Silva filled the void left by José Mourinho, who departed Benfica to take over at Real Madrid. Mourinho in turn replaced Arbeloa at Real Madrid, which meant Arbeloa had to depart. In this revolving-door chain, the former Real Madrid right-back has emerged as the strongest candidate on Fulham's table.

Arbeloa's playing background is illustrious. The 43-year-old former right-back, who wore Liverpool, Real Madrid and West Ham United shirts, won the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 European Championships with the Spain national team. He earned 56 caps with the national team and won two Champions League titles with Real Madrid. In 2020 he began work as a coach in Real Madrid's academy; over six years he worked in different age groups and collected multiple titles.

His managerial journey, however, was contested. He was appointed interim manager of the first team on January 12, 2026, after Xabi Alonso was dismissed. He experienced serious difficulties during his six-month tenure: his first match ended in a shock Copa del Rey exit to Albacete, Real Madrid were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals by Bayern Munich on a 6-4 aggregate, and the team finished La Liga eight points behind Barcelona. His tenure ended with Mourinho's appointment.

Fulham's hierarchy is also keeping alternative candidates on the table. The shortlist includes former Manchester United head coach Rúben Amorim, the club's former goalkeeping coach Hugo Oliveira (Portuguese, knows the Fulham structure well), Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira, former Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard, and Saudi Pro League's Al-Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle. Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, who was a clear favourite a few days ago, has withdrawn from the race.

Fulham finished the Premier League in 11th place in the last two seasons under Marco Silva. In the 2024-25 season they collected a club-record 54 points. During Silva's five-year tenure the team finished 10th, 13th, 11th and 11th. The new manager appointment is expected to be completed before the summer transfer window.

Arbeloa's lack of experience is the main concern. He has only served six months at top-level management with no Premier League experience. Despite that, he is still highly regarded in Spanish football circles and considered one of the most promising young managers to emerge from Real Madrid's coaching pathway. For Fulham, this appointment could be a fresh move capable of building on the foundation Silva established over five years.

The Athletic noted that talks are still in an early stage and Fulham is evaluating all options. An official announcement is expected in the coming weeks. The direction of negotiations with Arbeloa remains one of the most watched transitions in the Premier League.
