The Ivory Coast national team's head coaching position could once again be entrusted to Herve Renard. According to Le Parisien, 2023 Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach Emerse Fae's contract expired on Friday, July 31, without renewal; Fae said he was "disappointed" following the end of his tenure. As the federation searches for a new head coach ahead of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Renard is reportedly the clear favourite for the role.
The 57-year-old French coach previously managed Ivory Coast from June 2014 to May 2015, leading the country to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations title during that spell. That achievement made him the first man to lead two different countries to the tournament's title, having previously won it with Zambia in 2012. According to the report, Renard recently turned down an offer from the Tunisian Football Federation, a development seen as further strengthening the possibility of his return to Ivory Coast.
It's worth recalling that Fae took charge of the "Elephants" after they struggled through the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which they hosted, before going on to win the title. Renard's strong relationship with the federation from his previous spell, along with his enormous popularity in the country, makes him a natural candidate for the role.
