Another star transfer wind for Liverpool appears to be heading for a fruitless conclusion. According to the May 28 report by French sports newspaper L'Équipe, contract extension talks with the club's French centre-back Ibrahima Konate have hit a "complete dead end." According to information from sources close to the player, no extension agreement will now be reached. The 27-year-old defender is preparing to leave Liverpool on a free transfer when his five-year contract, signed in summer 2021 when he joined from RB Leipzig, expires.
This surprise has completely reversed the positive outlook of recent weeks. In April, Konate himself said in an interview that they were "close to an agreement" on an extension; at the same time, sources linked to Liverpool also saw him closer to staying at Anfield. In a previous L'Équipe report by Hugo Delom and Loic Tanzi, it had been stated that the parties had "never been closer to an agreement." But in recent weeks the situation has dramatically changed.
The blocking point in the talks is essentially the salary structure. Konate currently earns around £150,000 per week; however, he wants to rise to the same level as the club's highest earners. Liverpool, on the other hand, is committed to its priority of maintaining the in-club salary structure. This fundamental point of separation has led to talks of more than 18 months coming to an end.
Konate's departure means a serious loss for Liverpool. The Mersey side, which lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid in similar fashion last summer, is now about to lose Virgil van Dijk's central defensive partner for free. Real Madrid, PSG, and most recently Chelsea also have official interest in the French defender. Chelsea's last-minute official enquiry adds another dimension to the transfer race.
The difficulty for Liverpool does not end only with Konate's departure. The club has both two centre-back targets on its shortlist to fill Konate's spot and has experienced Premier League names like Marcos Senesi on reserve. But with Senesi turning to Tottenham, this plan may also change.
In conclusion, Liverpool is experiencing its first major crisis of the Slot era. After a bad season closed in 5th place, now the fear of losing the central anchor of the defense. The summer transfer window will be one of the most critical months that will shape the club's future.
