Real Madrid's search for a midfielder this summer window has reached a concrete stage thanks to Jose Mourinho's persistence. According to Plettigoal, Rodri has now become one of Florentino Perez's main targets; Real Madrid are ready to offer him a contract until 2030, and talks with Rodri's representatives have begun.

This development represents a concrete new stage of the Real Madrid interest mentioned in our earlier report on Rodri's back surgery. According to a report from L'Equipe, Perez, who had previously been reluctant about the move, has now given the green light for the club to pursue the 30-year-old midfielder; it is emphasised that Real Madrid have identified Rodri as the ideal long-term replacement for the void left in midfield following Toni Kroos' retirement.

Concrete steps in the talks have also emerged. According to Goal, club officials held a private meeting with Rodri's representatives at a restaurant in Madrid's Pozuelo de Alarcon district and agreed to begin working on the player's personal terms.

Mourinho's role in this file has also become clear. According to Sky Sports Germany's Patrick Berger, Real Madrid are now fully committed to bringing the Spain international back to La Liga; Mourinho is reported to have played an important role behind the scenes, having identified the City star as the ideal player to strengthen his midfield and personally urged club president Perez to complete the transfer.

The process, however, is not entirely smooth. According to a report from AS, Real Madrid made direct contact with City to formally deny any approach after ESPN reported the interest, with senior figures at the club reportedly furious over claims that a pre-agreement existed.

The fee negotiation is also becoming clearer. With his Manchester City contract running until June 2027 and the club reported to have offered him an extension he has yet to accept, Rodri is said to have convinced Madrid's management that he has returned to his best form through his performances at this summer's World Cup, where he won the Golden Ball; according to TeamTalk, Real Madrid do not intend to pay more than €50 million, while Manchester City expect a fee of around €100 million.
