Offseason activity continues in the NBA. After losing the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to the Miami Heat, the Boston Celtics keep weighing Jaylen Brown as a trade candidate as they look to reshape their roster. According to Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix, after the Giannis deal fell apart there are still "incoming" calls to the Celtics from teams wanting to discuss Brown, and the name heard most often over the last 24 hours is Cleveland Cavaliers' Evan Mobley.
Per Mannix, people around the league are keeping an eye on Cleveland and the 24-year-old Mobley, the 2025 Defensive Player of the Year, as a potential match for a Brown trade. But it is stressed this would be a highly "complicated" scenario to pull off. The main reason is Cleveland's finances: the Cavaliers are currently a second-apron team, facing severe restrictions under the current collective bargaining agreement. The salary math is hard too; Mobley will earn $50.1 million next season, Brown $57.1 million. Matching those salaries without breaching second-apron rules requires additional players and creative roster construction.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst also addressed the topic and offered a clear read on Cleveland. Windhorst said it is "not impossible" the Cavaliers would ever move Mobley, but that they "are not looking to move him right now." That matches what Cavaliers President Koby Altman said after the Eastern Conference finals; Altman made clear Mobley is part of the franchise's future.
Brown's future has been a topic since Boston's season ended with a first-round exit to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics had offered Brown and two future first-round picks for Giannis; but the Milwaukee Bucks accepted the Miami Heat's package. As it stands, this is not a completed trade but interest and speculation circulating across the league. Still, Mobley's name constantly coming up — first with Giannis and now with Brown — is a sign of how highly the league values the player Cleveland has developed. Boston is expected to keep exploring the market for Brown after the failed Giannis pursuit.
