In the first Round of 32 game at the 2026 World Cup, South Africa and Canada met at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and the opening 45 minutes finished goalless. Canada were the more effective side from the start; Jesse Marsch's team pressed the opposition goal and clearly took the upper hand in terms of chances.

The statistics laid that dominance bare. Canada were well ahead on expected goals (xG), 0.97 to South Africa's 0.06; they led 8-3 on total shots and 3-0 on big chances. The 17-5 gap in touches in the opposition box also summed up Canada's pressure. South Africa, by contrast, had more of the ball (55%) but could not turn that into meaningful chances in attack.

The half's most contentious moment came in the 45th minute. Canada's Richie Laryea went down inside the box after a defender's challenge; referee João Pinheiro, thought not to have seen the incident clearly, waved play on, and Canada's penalty appeal went unanswered. Despite all their pressure, Canada headed to the dressing room without a goal.

Both teams are playing a World Cup knockout match for the first time in their history, and will look for the goal in the second half to reach the Round of 16. The winners will face the victor of Netherlands-Morocco in the next round.

First-half stats (South Africa-Canada): xG 0.06-0.97 · Possession 55%-45% · Total shots 3-8 · Big chances 0-3 · Touches in opposition box 5-17
