Saudi Arabia and Uruguay have confirmed their starting line-ups ahead of their 2026 World Cup clash. Kicking off in Seattle, both teams have opted for a 4-4-2.
In Hervé Renard's Saudi Arabia, experienced goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais starts between the posts. Al-Amri and Tambakti pair up in defence, while the team's star and captain Salem Al-Dawsari takes a leading role in midfield. Up front, Firas Al-Buraikan leads the line alongside the forward selected ahead of Saleh Al-Shehri, with Al-Juwayr also operating in an advanced role.
Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay field a strong side. Fernando Muslera starts in goal, with Varela, Cáceres and Olivera in defence. Midfield features a powerful unit built around captain Federico Valverde, Manuel Ugarte and Rodrigo Bentancur. In attack, Darwin Núñez and Maxi Araújo are tasked with carrying the team's creativity and threat.
Injuries were notable on the Uruguay side. The absence of Ronald Araújo and Brian Rodríguez, both out with calf injuries, directly affected Bielsa's defensive and wide rotation. The bench, however, still holds experienced names such as Giménez, Pellistri, Canobbio and Sanabria, giving Bielsa plenty of in-game options.
On paper, Uruguay, ranked 16th by FIFA, are favourites against 61st-ranked Saudi Arabia. But Renard's disciplined, combative side will be hoping to spring a surprise, especially with their fans behind them. The three points on offer in this group opener could prove crucial for the matches to come. With both teams likely aiming for a cautious but effective start, the opening exchanges may set the tone for the entire contest.
