Saudi Arabia and Uruguay drew 1-1 in one of the 2026 FIFA World Cup's opening matches at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The pre-match favourites Uruguay could not claim the win, while a disciplined Saudi side put up a battling display to rescue a valuable point.
It was Saudi Arabia who surprisingly went ahead. Late in the first half, in the 41st minute, Ali Al Amri found the net to put the underdogs 1-0 up and into the break with the advantage. Al Amri was booked shortly afterwards.
In the second half, Uruguay made changes, with Sanabria and Canobbio among the substitutions to boost their attack. Dominating possession almost entirely, Uruguay found their equaliser in the 80th minute through Maxi Araujo to make it 1-1. They continued to push for a winner after that goal but could not breach the Saudi defence again.
The statistics laid bare Uruguay's superiority. The South Americans had 67% possession and fired in 28 shots, while Saudi Arabia managed just seven. Uruguay also finished ahead on expected goals (xG) by 1.60 to 0.99 and entered the opposition box 40 times. Even so, Saudi Arabia largely protected their goal, which proved the main reason for the draw. Refereed by Italy's Maurizio Mariani, the match was played in front of more than 62,000 fans.
The result means both teams open their campaign on a single point. Uruguay were left frustrated at dropping two points despite their dominance, while Saudi Arabia began the tournament with a morale-boosting draw. For the rest of the group, Uruguay's need to fix their lack of cutting edge and Saudi Arabia's bid to sustain this resistance will be the key storylines.
