In the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group C opening match, Scotland managed to beat Haiti 1-0 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough near Boston. The match watched by 64,146 spectators resulted in Scotland's favour with John McGinn's only goal scored in the 28th minute. The Tartan Army experienced the joy of starting with a victory in the tournament they returned to after a 28-year gap since the 1998 France World Cup. Haiti under Sebastien Migne's management experienced a heavy disappointment in the World Cup opening match in which they took the field after 52 years. The match was officiated by Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal.
In the opening section of the match, both teams made a cautious start; however, Scotland's pressure produced a result in the 28th minute. John McGinn sent the ball to Haiti's net with a shot he used from inside the penalty area and recorded his team's winning goal. McGinn's goal also went down in history as Scotland's first goal scored at the World Cup after a 28-year gap. In the 39th minute, Haiti's Jean-Ricner Bellegarde received a yellow card for tripping. Throughout the first half, Haiti tried to establish pressure but could not manage to find the net. The half ended 1-0 ahead.
Scotland's second half started with Steve Clarke's move. In the 46th minute, Aaron Hickey received his first yellow card for pulling. In the 61st minute, on the Haiti side, Sebastien Migne brought Casimir Joseph on for Louicius Deedson. In the 75th minute, three substitutions came at once on the Scotland front: Ryan Christie came on for Ben Gannon-Doak, Nathan Patterson for Aaron Hickey, and Lyndon Dykes for Che Adams. In the 76th minute, on the Haiti side, Joseph Lewis came on for Wilson Isidor. In the 83rd minute, Scotland made two more changes; Curtis Fleming came on for John McGinn, and Kenny McLean for Lawrence Shankland. In the 85th minute, Haiti's last move came; Fortune Yves came on for Ruben Providence. The flurry of yellow cards continued in the final moments of the match: in the 90+1, Scottish Curtis Fleming was exposed to a yellow card for pushing, and in the 90+5, Scottish Kenny McLean also for pushing.
The second half ended 0-0 without a goal scored and the match was completed with Scotland's 1-0 victory. The match statistics showed that Haiti displayed a balanced performance in the game. In expected goals (xG) value, Haiti produced 1.20 while Scotland remained at 1.07. Possession was 54% to 46% in favour of Haiti. In total shots, Haiti reached 15 and Scotland 9. In big chances, Scotland produced 2 and Haiti 1. In the category of touches in the opposition penalty area, Haiti recorded 22 and Scotland 21. These statistics show that Haiti was not behind their opponent in terms of game but was inadequate in evaluating goal opportunities. Scotland, on the other hand, recorded its only goal at the most critical moment and wrote 3 points to their account. In Group C, after Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1, Scotland settled at the top of the group with 3 points. Scotland's next match is against Morocco on June 19; Haiti will face Brazil on June 19.
