As the 2026 World Cup is about to start, the talks around Spain's star Lamine Yamal reached another old star, Patrice Evra. According to ESPN UK's June 6 post, the 44-year-old former French national team captain said the following words about the 19-year-old Barcelona star: "Evra on his prime against Yamal, I would eat him alive. I'm sorry, Lamine. I love you... But ask Cristiano, ask Messi, ask other players when they faced me, I am not a good friend."
The assertive tone of the statement was also quickly conveyed by the French press. Foot Mercato wrote that Evra's words were "a bold sortie" and emphasised that they brought back the debate between 2000s football and today's football. The expression "I am not a good friend" in Evra's words recalled the harsh on-field battles he experienced with Cristiano Ronaldo during the Manchester United years and with Lionel Messi in El Clásicos. The French player, who played 379 matches with the Manchester United jersey and won 5 Premier Leagues and 1 Champions League, was known throughout his career for his personal battles against the world's biggest stars.
In the statement, Evra also emphasised the contrast between different eras of football. The former French left back also commented on social media and modern football culture: "The media are hypocrites, no consistency, no balance, just noise." Evra in parallel also praised Bayern Munich's French star Michael Olise; describing him as "that's my boy, calm, relaxed". As for the Yamal comparison, instead of balancing it with the Olise praise, he served it with the "I would eat him alive" phrase — which became the most circulated part of the passage on the internet.
No response has yet come from the Lamine Yamal side. The 19-year-old Barcelona star is in the camp preparing for La Roja's 2026 World Cup opening match; Spain is in Group H along with Cape Verde, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. In The Athletic's 48-team ranking published last week, Spain was placed at the top and France at the 2nd position. Evra's statement was therefore interpreted not only as a personal comparison but also as pre-tournament tension between two great rivals.
The former Manchester United legend has been coming to the foreground in the football world as a commentator in recent years. From Premier League match commentary to social media posts, Evra's comments spread quickly on social media in a wide area. His latest words about Yamal were also watched millions of times within 31 minutes in addition to ESPN UK's post, via Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. The statement has become the newest debate topic of the football world 5 days before the 2026 World Cup. Yamal's match against Cape Verde with the Spain jersey on June 15 looks like it will attract more attention under the shadow of Evra's words.
