A major absence looms over Canada's August hard-court event. Tennis Canada has confirmed that both Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic have withdrawn from the National Bank Open in Montreal, with the tournament beginning next weekend.
Sinner shared his decision in an emotional statement. Released on Friday, his statement read: "Never easy to miss such an important event, but we believe this is the right decision to prioritize my health. I'm disappointed not to be there, but I look forward to returning to Montreal in the future."
Both players' recent form is notable. Neither Sinner nor Djokovic have played since Wimbledon; Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev in the final to claim his fifth Grand Slam title.
Their positions in the tournament field have also become clear. Sinner was the top seed in the tournament, while Djokovic was seventh before pulling out.
These withdrawals have a direct impact on the tournament draw. Zverev now sits at No. 1, with Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime moving up to the No. 2 seed for his hometown tournament.
The players' next targets are also known. Both are recalled to potentially return to action at the Cincinnati Open, with main-draw play beginning the day the National Bank Open ends, before the US Open in late August.
