Donald Trump's phone call to FIFA to postpone Folarin Balogun's red card suspension, which he received during the Bosnia and Herzegovina match, has sparked a major crisis in the football world. The decision to delay the penalty following the former US President's intervention has drawn widespread backlash.
US Men's National Team head coach Mauricio Pochettino did not hide his discomfort with the situation. Emphasizing that his job is solely to coach the team, the experienced manager said, "If FIFA's disciplinary rules allow you to play Balogun, there is no problem. But personally, I am disappointed with people mixing things up. They turned it into politics and manipulation."

Donald Trump, the central figure in the controversy, defended his intervention. Confirming that he spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino about the red card incident, Trump stated, "I love sports and I really understand sports well. That was not a foul. Not even a rule violation. Just two guys running at full speed and accidentally colliding." Trump added, "If you look into the referee's background, it's a bit suspicious. Balogun is our best player. He got a red card with a decision nobody could believe. When I heard it meant he couldn't play in the next game, I asked FIFA to review it. How do you punish someone for a game that hasn't been played yet? This is very unjust."
Amidst mounting pressure, FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized the independence of the institution. Noting that he doesn't always agree with Disciplinary Committee decisions, Infantino said, "Whether we personally like a decision or not doesn't matter. Respect for independent institutions and the rule of law is the fundamental element that protects the integrity of our tournaments and FIFA's credibility."

Meanwhile, the Belgian Football Association is refusing to let the issue go. Stressing that their objection is not merely about the Belgium-USA match result, the federation stated, "Regardless of the sporting result, we are deeply concerned by the developments. We will continue our struggle in the coming hours, days, and months to defend football's ethical principles, fair competition, and the interests of the game as a whole."
