Mexican midfielder Gilberto Mora, the youngest player at the 2026 World Cup, has put an end to weeks of speculation surrounding a potential move to Real Madrid. According to ESPN, the 17-year-old has signed a new three-year deal with Liga MX side Club Tijuana. Mora, who made his senior Mexico debut at just 16 in January 2025, had attracted interest from several European heavyweights, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and AC Milan.
Despite the prospect of a post-World Cup move to a Champions League club, Mora opted to stay at Tijuana and was handed the club's No. 10 shirt. Speaking after signing the extension, Mora said: "I am very grateful to Club Tijuana. This club has helped me grow so much as a player and as a person. This motivates me even more to keep working hard and improving every day. Right now my focus is on helping the team and giving everything for Mexico at this World Cup."
Mora had already carved his name into the record books before the tournament even began, holding titles as the youngest senior Mexico international, the youngest Liga MX goalscorer, and the youngest player of any nationality to win a senior international tournament. While the decision will disappoint suitors, particularly Real Madrid, it signals that the teenager is choosing to continue the next stage of his development on home soil for now.
