Álvarez speaks out: "The best for everyone is for me to go"

Argentina's star striker Julián Álvarez has lifted the curtain on his future at Atlético Madrid. Speaking after Argentina's 2-0 win over Austria at the 2026 World Cup, the 26-year-old openly said he wants to leave the club and that it would be the best solution for everyone.

Stressing he was trying to be honest, Álvarez said it was not the right time to talk about it but that he did not want to hide either. After revealing he had spoken with the people he needed to at the club, the star said the best thing for everyone was a transfer and finished with a clear line: "I want to fulfil my dream."

Álvarez's preferred destination is reported to be Barcelona. The Catalan club are searching for a striker to replace the departing Robert Lewandowski and have placed the Argentine at the top of their priority list. In addition, Champions League finalists PSG and Arsenal are also said to be interested. Last month, Real Madrid reportedly made a €150 million bid, which Atlético turned down.

At Atlético Madrid, the stance is clear: the club will not entertain a sale unless the player's €500 million release clause is met in full. The board fired back at both Barcelona and Real Madrid on social media, accusing their rivals of "calculated leaks" and "fake news." Signed from Manchester City for around €95 million in the summer of 2024 and under contract until 2030, Álvarez had been one of Atlético's most crucial attacking weapons this season.

Álvarez's remarks could shift the negotiating balance despite the club's hard line. By going public with his wish to leave, the player pushes suitors to act more freely at the table, while appearing to weaken Atlético's hand somewhat. Meanwhile, Álvarez got minutes against Austria after Lautaro Martínez's injury, and after the game praised teammate Lionel Messi's form, calling him the best in history. Atlético's decision in the coming days will be one of the most talked-about files of the summer window.
