One of European football's most rooted coaching family trees is finding a new stage for itself. According to a May 28 report by Spanish newspaper Marca, Davide Ancelotti has reached a full agreement with the club to become Lille's new head coach. The 36-year-old Italian coach will replace Frenchman Bruno Genesio, who carried LOSC to 3rd place and into the Champions League last season. Foot Mercato and L'Équipe have also confirmed the deal.

Davide Ancelotti's career path was shaped not in his father Carlo's shadow but passing by his side. The younger Ancelotti has served as Carlo Ancelotti's assistant at PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli, and Everton for more than the last decade. He also worked alongside his father at the Brazil national team. But Davide's real head-coaching test came at Brazil's Botafogo club for a five-month period from summer 2025 to December 2025; the record is a graph of 12 wins, 9 draws, and 6 defeats.

For Lille, this transfer is evaluated as president Olivier Létang's bold gamble. Létang's first priority had been Thiago Motta; the short list also included Stéphane Dumont and one of Genesio's assistants Dimitri Farbos. But Létang finally chose Davide Ancelotti. At the same time, the possibility of Genesio returning to Marseille was on the agenda; amid Marseille's own crises, this remains uncertain.

Davide Ancelotti could be officially introduced to the press at Lille's Luchin training facility at 14:00 on Monday June 1. His name had previously been mentioned with Rangers, but at the last minute he turned to Lille. This choice also takes away Davide's opportunity to serve as his father's assistant on the Brazil coaching staff at the World Cup; Carlo Ancelotti will go to the tournament alone as Brazil's head coach.

For Lille, the new season starts with great expectations. Ahead of Davide are the 2026-27 Champions League campaign, the mission of challenging PSG's dominance with the squad, and the task of properly managing rising young talents including Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who was recently called up by Belgium. Lille is characterized as one of two clubs that have most strongly challenged PSG's dominance over the past decade; the 2021 title is still remembered.

This transfer is a sign that a young name from Europe's most experienced coaching lineage will face a great test on his own. Carrying the Ancelotti surname is both a great advantage and great pressure. Lille's young coach will do everything in his power to make a mark on European stages independent of his father in the 2026-27 season.
