Ancelotti's firm no to Italy: my target is Brazil

Another name has been crossed off Italy's search for a new head coach. According to Fabrizio Romano, Carlo Ancelotti has no intention of becoming Italy's next head coach; the Italian tactician wants to lead Brazil at the 2028 Copa America and the 2030 World Cup. This statement puts an end to speculation over whether Ancelotti would be added to the list, following the recent emergence of names such as Pep Guardiola and Andrea Pirlo.

The background to Ancelotti's commitment to Brazil is rather solid. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) made clear it had no intention of dismissing the head coach even after the team's Round of 16 exit at the World Cup, a 2-1 defeat to Norway in which Erling Haaland scored twice, instead signing a contract extension with him running until the 2030 World Cup.

The federation's resolve was also reinforced in words. National team coordinator Rodrigo Caetano stated following the elimination: "It is now up to us to emphasise the need for a cycle that proceeds normally, with a little more calmness; continuing our work with the coach through the 2030 World Cup while making the necessary adjustments."

Ancelotti himself has also confirmed this resolve. Having taken charge in May 2025 and had his contract extended until 2030 in May 2026, before the World Cup, the coach stated following the elimination: "A defeat is the start of a new adventure. Now we need to keep working hard and keep improving. This is football. This is sport. You just have to deal with it. We will use this as fuel going forward."

There is also a personal motivation behind this resolve. As the world's highest-paid national team coach with an annual salary of around €10 million, Ancelotti — despite winning the Champions League five times across his club career at Real Madrid and AC Milan — has yet to win a World Cup; this is cited as another reason for his commitment to the Brazil project, one that represents a career-completing goal for a coach who was on the pitch as Arrigo Sacchi's assistant during Italy's penalty shootout defeat in the 1994 final.
