Another record for Ronaldo: he is the oldest

Cristiano Ronaldo has put his name to another record at the World Cup. Featuring in Portugal's 2-1 win over Croatia in the Round of 32, the 41-year-old star claimed the title of the oldest player to take the field in a World Cup knockout stage, at 41 years and 147 days. This achievement added another record to the experienced player's long career.

Ronaldo reached another record in the same match. Converting the penalty won after a VAR review in the 68th minute, the experienced player became the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout stage. This goal also went down in the records as the first goal Ronaldo has scored in a World Cup knockout round throughout his career. In the match played in Toronto, Ronaldo drew attention with his composure from the penalty spot.

Croatia were the side who went ahead. With Ivan Perišić's goal putting Croatia 1-0 up, Perišić rose to become his country's all-time leading scorer at the World Cup. Portugal, who levelled the score through Ronaldo's penalty, took the upper hand in the closing stages of the contest. With the goal scored by Gonçalo Ramos in stoppage time (90+4), Portugal won the match 2-1 and advanced to the Round of 16.

This match was Ronaldo's 26th World Cup game; with it, the experienced player moved to one behind Lothar Matthäus on the list of players with the most World Cup appearances. Lionel Messi tops that list with 29 matches. Meanwhile, Luka Modrić started and captained Croatia at 40 years and 296 days; thus, for the first time in a World Cup match, two outfield players over the age of 40 faced each other. Ronaldo, who is featuring in his sixth World Cup, and Portugal will face Spain in the Round of 16.
