An unexpected development has emerged in the Netherlands national team's search for a head coach. Arne Slot has rejected the Netherlands national team head coach offer; the main reason is said to be the Dutch manager's wish to continue his career at a club side.
There is also an important detail here. Slot is not currently a serving club manager; the 47-year-old, who left Liverpool at the end of May (replaced by Andoni Iraola) and has been without a job since, has informed the KNVB (Dutch Football Association) that he prefers to work at a European club in the future rather than the national team.
There is also a consequence for the players. According to reliable Dutch source NU.nl, Slot informed the federation that he "wishes to continue working in club football" and wants to "wait and see what comes his way in the near future"; this decision means he will not reunite with Virgil van Dijk, Jeremie Frimpong, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo on the international stage.
This is also not the only offer he has rejected. According to This Is Anfield, Slot also turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli; clubs from England, Germany and Italy (including AC Milan and Fulham) are reported to have contacted him following his Anfield exit, but no concrete move has yet materialised.
The reason the talks stalled has also been relayed. According to DaveOCKOP, Slot's talks with the federation are reported to have stalled because the manager preferred a contract running until the end of Euro 2028 rather than a longer deal extending to the 2030 World Cup; according to Telegraaf, Slot said: "I want to remain active in club football in Europe, and that wasn't decided today."
The candidates for the vacant post have also become clear. For the seat vacated by Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after a last-32 exit at this summer's World Cup, Netherlands U21 coach Michael Reiziger and PSV's Peter Bosz are now considered the frontrunners, with the Netherlands set to face Germany in the Nations League on September 24.
