Arsenal and Manchester City met at the Principality Stadium in the FA Community Shield final, English football's traditional season-opening showpiece. The first half of the neutral-venue clash ended with Arsenal 2-0 ahead.
Arsenal stunned their opponents from the very start, taking the lead after just 23 seconds. Following a superb through ball from Lewis-Skelly that split the City defence, Riccardo Calafiori met the ball and calmly slotted it into the net for the opener. The early goal gave Arsenal exactly the start they wanted.
Manchester City's Phil Foden picked up a yellow card in the 24th minute, before Arsenal doubled their advantage in the 28th. Kai Havertz got on the end of Tzolis' headed knock-down, finishing well to make it 2-0 and cement his side's dominance. In the 38th minute, Calafiori, the architect of the opener, also picked up a yellow card.
With the first half ending this way, attention now turns to how Manchester City will respond in the second half in search of a way back into the match. Arsenal fans are hoping their side can hold onto this lead and lift the season's first trophy.
