Arsenal not giving up on Julian Alvarez

One of Arsenal's most notable stories of the summer window has turned into a patient pursuit. The club remain interested in Atletico Madrid's Argentine striker Julian Alvarez; that persistence continues despite Atletico having no intention of selling the player.

The player's first preference has not changed. Alvarez is reported to prefer a move to Barcelona; however, communication channels between Arsenal and Atletico remain open. A significant connection helps keep that dialogue alive: Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta's strong relationship stemming from his former role at Atletico.

The state of the talks has also become clear. According to Sky Sports Italia's Luca Bendoni, initial discussions have taken place between the clubs at ownership level, and communication lines remain open. However, Atletico's reluctance to sell and the valuation gap between the two clubs remain obstacles to overcome: Arsenal are reported to be unwilling to push past a £90 million valuation, while Atletico want in excess of £100 million.

Competition further complicates the file. A previous €100 million bid from Barcelona was rejected, while PSG have also made contact with the player through head coach Luis Enrique. Sources indicate Alvarez would be open to Arsenal should a move to Barcelona fail to materialise, positioning the Gunners as "a real alternative, but not the player's first choice."

The player's performances also justify this intense interest. Having contributed 20 goals and 9 assists in 49 official matches last season, the 26-year-old will go on holiday after the World Cup, with talks over his future at Atletico expected with the club hierarchy afterward.
