A new name has emerged in Arsenal's search for defensive reinforcements. According to Diario Sport, the English giants have added Barcelona's French defender Jules Kounde to their transfer list. According to the report, head coach Mikel Arteta is seeking defensive depth due to William Saliba's injury and Jurrien Timber's ongoing struggles with a chronic groin issue, and Kounde's ability to play both right-back and centre-back makes him an ideal target for that profile.
According to the report, Kounde is no longer viewed as untouchable under Hansi Flick, with the German coach said to be ready to rely on Eric Garcia and Xavi Espart at right-back. It's noted that Barcelona, following Ronald Araujo's loan move to Liverpool, are ready to sanction high-profile sales to create budget and salary space for priority transfer targets such as Rodri, Julian Alvarez and Joao Cancelo.
With a contract running until 2031 and said to be determined to stay at Barcelona, Kounde's future is nevertheless said to be subject to change due to the club's transfer priorities and Flick's decision. It's noted that Arsenal sounded out the player a few months ago and that the French international indicated he would be open to the move, though a potential deal is said to cost around €75 million, a figure that could prove prohibitive. Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in the player but would need to sell before making a purchase.
