Everton are set to strengthen their midfield by signing Arsenal's Danish international Christian Norgaard. According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, the Merseyside club has reached an agreement in principle with Arsenal for the 32-year-old at a fee in the region of £7 million (€8.2m). Norgaard is expected to undergo a medical next week.
Norgaard, who joined Arsenal from Brentford for around £10 million last summer, struggled to make his mark at the Emirates. The Dane made just seven Premier League appearances, totalling only 101 minutes, and started only once, on the final day of the season against Crystal Palace, by which point the title was already secured. Despite the lack of game time, he never voiced any complaints during his season at the club, which ended with a Premier League title.
Arsenal are expected to reinvest the proceeds from the sale into a move for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, with a verbal agreement worth £77 million said to already be in place between the two clubs. At Everton, Norgaard is viewed as the natural successor to Idrissa Gana Gueye, who left as a free agent at the end of last season. The experienced midfielder, who captained Brentford across six seasons at the club, is also expected to bring leadership qualities David Moyes has been looking to add to his midfield.
