Atletico set their sights on free agent Sancho

The future of a free-agent English star is taking shape around unexpected interest from Spain. According to BILD, Atletico Madrid are eyeing Jadon Sancho; no advanced negotiations have taken place yet, and Sancho would need to accept a significant wage cut to sign. Competition for the 26-year-old, who became a free agent after his Manchester United contract expired in June, is heating up.

One side of this competition also involves a familiar name. According to a detailed BILD report, Sancho's former club Borussia Dortmund are also considering a third reunion with the player; however, the German club is reported to be willing to move only under certain conditions, with the player needing to accept a base salary of €5 million a year, with the remainder heavily weighted towards performance-related bonuses.

The background to Dortmund's interest has also become clear. Karim Adeyemi's potential transfer to Barcelona raises the prospect of an additional need for Dortmund in the wide attacking positions.

The competition is not limited to these two clubs alone. It was reported last month that Besiktas were also exploring the possibility of signing the former Manchester United player and preparing an offer; according to an earlier report from Corriere dello Sport, Sancho had also indicated he was willing to accept a £200,000-a-week wage cut in order to move to Juventus.

The player's career story also explains the background to this uncertainty. Having joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund for around €100 million in 2021 and failing to live up to expectations in England, Sancho spent his last season on loan at Chelsea; the player is now expected to determine a clear direction for his career at this point.
