Atletico's Surprise Move for Romero

An unexpected twist has emerged in the Cristian "Cuti" Romero transfer saga. According to information shared by Fabrizio Romano via Marca, Atletico Madrid are preparing to submit an offer to Tottenham for Romero following the sales of Nahuel Molina and possibly Matteo Ruggeri. Romano wrote: "Atletico Madrid are preparing a bid for Cristian Romero to be submitted after next sales (Molina + possibly Ruggeri). Bid to be in line with Inter's previous proposal; Inter had a €40m package in place with Spurs but nothing done on the player's side. Simeone wants Cuti."

According to the report, Atletico's opening offer will sit at around €30 million, below Tottenham's reported valuation of €40-50 million. Still, it's noted that Simeone has long been an admirer of Romero, and the player himself is said to favour a move to Spain — specifically Atletico — over a return to Serie A. Romero is also said to have included a special clause in his most recent contract renewal allowing him to consider offers from Spain's three biggest clubs.

Inter had previously agreed a package worth €35 million plus €5 million in bonuses with Tottenham, though nothing has progressed on the player's side, with the Italian club's move reportedly slowed as they wait on Benjamin Pavard's potential departure. That uncertainty appears to have opened a window for Atletico to step in. With his contract at Tottenham running until 2029 and having played a key role in the club's UEFA Europa League triumph last season, a decision on Romero's future is expected to become clearer in the coming days.
