Behind the Vegas punch: the Adebayo-Herro tension

The NBA's most talked-about incident of the summer took place on a practice court at a Las Vegas hotel. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Miami Heat star center Bam Adebayo struck former teammate Tyler Herro — now a Milwaukee Buck — during a physical altercation on Friday morning. The two had been teammates in Miami for seven seasons, from 2019 to 2026. So where did the tension come from?

It all began with the summer's blockbuster trade. The Miami Heat made a major move to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Bucks, sending Tyler Herro to Milwaukee along with three first-round picks, a pick swap, Kasparas Jakucionis, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kel'el Ware in exchange for Giannis and Bobby Portis. For Herro, who had spent years in Miami, the departure quickly turned into a source of friction.

The spark came from leaked private messages. Following the trade, Herro exchanged messages with a Heat fan on Instagram, and that conversation was leaked by the fan. In the messages, Herro targeted Adebayo over his salary and defensive performance, with lines like "It's a guy making 60 million but they're worried about me" and "You should get paid 60 million to be a top-tier defender on some nights? I'm just wondering." Herro also shared a statistic showing the players with the lowest mid-range shooting percentage, a list that included Adebayo.

According to Charania, the Vegas incident started precisely when Adebayo approached Herro about those social-media posts, ending when the center struck him. The NBA Summer League was underway in the city at the time. No injuries have been reported so far, and while the Miami Heat said they were aware of the incident, they declined to comment; neither the NBA nor the Bucks issued a statement. With Giannis already set to face his old team in the 2026-27 season, the episode has added extra tension to the matchups between the two clubs.
