Belgium's new boss officially confirmed: Mark van Bommel

The search for Belgium's national team head coach has officially come to an end. Mark van Bommel has become Belgium's new head coach on a deal running until 2028. The Dutch tactician replaces Rudi Garcia, who left his post following Belgium's quarter-final exit at the 2026 World Cup.

Garcia's legacy is also notable. Having taken charge in January 2025, the French coach left an impressive record of 12 wins, 6 draws and just 2 defeats from 20 matches; however, following the elimination against Spain at the World Cup, the federation decided to move into a new era.

The background to the appointment process has also become clear. Belgian Football Association technical director Vincent Mannaert is reported to have played a key role in the process, with Van Bommel identified as the right man to lead the country's talented squad following extensive consultations.

Van Bommel's club career also provides solid grounding for this appointment. Having managed PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg and Royal Antwerp — winning the league and cup double with Antwerp in the 2022-23 season — the 48-year-old Van Bommel is taking charge of a national team for the first time with this appointment.

His playing background is also no stranger to the international stage. Having played for clubs such as PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan, and earned more than 40 caps for the Netherlands, Van Bommel's lack of French is not expected to pose a significant obstacle; the head coach is expected to begin work immediately, assembling his coaching staff, assessing the current squad and preparing for the next international window.
