Portuguese club Benfica are adding an experienced name to their defence. According to ABC, French defender Clément Lenglet, currently at Atlético Madrid, will continue his career at Benfica. As reported by O Jogo, Benfica president Rui Costa announced at the club's general assembly that Lenglet will join the team to strengthen the defence.
For the 31-year-old, this transfer marks a new chapter in his career. Although his Atlético Madrid contract runs until 2028, he has not been getting the playing time he wanted recently. After featuring in 36 games in his first season, Lenglet fell behind David Hancko last season and made just 24 appearances. He was also directly involved in both goals conceded against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final.
Having played in different leagues throughout his career, Lenglet will experience the Portuguese league for the first time. The Frenchman, who has previously worn the shirts of Nancy, Sevilla, Barcelona, Tottenham and Aston Villa, first joined Atlético on loan from Barcelona before being signed permanently. The experienced centre-back is expected to play an important role in Benfica's defensive plans for the new season.
On Benfica's side, the move is seen as part of a strategy to strengthen the squad with experienced names. Targeting both the league title in Portugal and an ambitious run in Europe, the Lisbon club aims to make its line more solid with this experienced addition to its defence. The official steps of the transfer are expected to be completed in the coming days.
