Betting scandal: Malik Beasley to surrender to government

Another name has been added to the betting controversies that have shaken the NBA of late. According to information relayed through his attorney, nine-year NBA veteran Malik Beasley has been indicted on federal charges tied to a sports-betting scheme involving elements such as point shaving and prop bets. The U.S. government is said to be coordinating the player's voluntary surrender this week.

The background to the case stretches back about a year. The federal investigation began in June 2025, with the allegations dating to the 2023-24 season, when Beasley wore the Milwaukee Bucks jersey. At the time, at least one major sportsbook flagged unusual betting activity around the player's statistics; in particular, the odds on Beasley finishing under a certain rebound total moved notably before a game on January 31, 2024. The probe surfaced just as Beasley was on the verge of agreeing a multiyear deal with the Detroit Pistons; the offer was put on hold, and other teams also kept their distance while a possible charge or league discipline remained unclear.

The charges being confirmed means the league is facing another difficult betting-related file. It should be noted that the presumption of innocence applies at this stage of the legal process; the betting-related charges have not yet been resolved in court. Beasley, 29, has played for six different teams in his career and most recently spent the 2024-25 season with the Pistons. The course of both the legal process and any potential league sanctions will become clearer in the period ahead.
