An era has closed in South American football. The role of Marcelo Bielsa, who managed the Uruguay national team, came to an end after the team's group-stage elimination at the World Cup. The experienced manager's contract ran only through the tournament, and Bielsa had announced beforehand that his role would end after the World Cup.
In their final group match at the tournament, Uruguay were eliminated with a 1-0 loss to Spain and finished the event without a single win. The South American side, who drew with Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, could not get the results they wanted in their group. With Cape Verde advancing from the group, Uruguay fell short of expectations and made an early exit from the tournament.
Speaking after the elimination, Bielsa took full responsibility for the failure. In his remarks, the experienced manager said he had left nothing behind, expressing that the contributions made over a three-year tenure had not taken hold because results were not achieved. Bielsa also added that, given the quality of the team, he should have achieved more.
At 19th in the FIFA rankings, Uruguay were the highest-ranked team eliminated up to that point in the tournament. This departure of the 70-year-old manager, who had also managed Leeds United in the Premier League, became one of the storylines on the world football agenda.
