Brighton smash their club record: Luka Vusković

Brighton's biggest move of the summer transfer window is reaching its conclusion. According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sport DE, today is "Luka Vusković day" at the club: the medical and the signing of a contract running until 2031 for Tottenham's 19-year-old Croatian centre-back are scheduled for today. The move, described as the club's "dream signing", is set to be finalised today.

The financial dimension of the transfer will go down in Brighton's history. The fee has been set at around €53 million fixed plus €5 million in add-ons; that figure represents the club's transfer record. Tottenham, meanwhile, protected their long-term interests by securing a 20 percent sell-on clause and matching rights for any future sale.

Vusković's story is one of the Premier League's most striking development journeys. Signed from Hajduk Split for around £12 million in 2023, the young centre-back never made a senior appearance for Tottenham. Spending last season on loan at Hamburg, the Croatian scored six goals in 30 matches to establish himself among Europe's standout young centre-backs; he was also part of Croatia's World Cup squad. The medical came onto the agenda following Croatia's elimination from the tournament.

Traffic between the two clubs has flowed in both directions this summer; Jan Paul van Hecke moved the opposite way to Tottenham for £52 million. The crowded centre-back rotation of Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Radu Dragusin, Kevin Danso and Marcos Senesi played a part in Tottenham sanctioning the sale. Brighton, who qualified for the Conference League by finishing eighth, aim to make the transfer official before their training camp in France, which begins on July 23.
