Two of England's biggest clubs are chasing the same young talent. According to Nicolo Schira, Chelsea and Tottenham have both contacted the camp of Kerim Alajbegovic, with Bayer Leverkusen demanding €30 million for the player.
Competition for the Cologne-born 18-year-old winger has heated up significantly in recent days. According to OneFootball, Leverkusen have raised the price up to €35 million; Chelsea's entry into the race is described as bad news for Atalanta, Milan, Roma and Fiorentina.
Chelsea's leading position in this race has also become clear. According to the Daily Telegraph, Chelsea are the frontrunners in the transfer race, with head coach Xabi Alonso reported to be "enthusiastic" about the young talent.
The player's career story explains this intense interest. Having come through Cologne's academy before joining Leverkusen's youth ranks in 2021 and moving to Red Bull Salzburg last summer, Alajbegovic enjoyed a breakout season in Austria, contributing 13 goals and 4 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions; this performance convinced Leverkusen to exercise their buy-back option in March, with the player returning to Germany on a five-year deal.
His World Cup performance is also a significant factor driving up his price. Having played an important role in Bosnia and Herzegovina's participation at this summer's World Cup, Alajbegovic is recalled to have contributed to his country's progression to the Round of 16 by scoring in the group match against Qatar, starting in three of the team's four matches at the tournament.
The background to the competition also paints a notable picture. According to Italian media, clubs such as Juventus, Atalanta and Fiorentina were the first to show interest, but Roma and Atalanta were unable to go above £17 million, while Chelsea are reported to be prepared to comfortably exceed that figure. Previously linked with Arsenal, Manchester United and Sunderland, the player is noted to be capable of playing on either wing as well as in the number 10 position.
