Chelsea have turned to Porto's Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa in search of a lasting solution to their goalkeeping situation. According to Mundo Deportivo, the London club is preparing to pay the full €60 million release clause in the 26-year-old's contract. Head coach Xabi Alonso's admiration for the player is said to have grown further after watching his performances for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup, viewing him as the ideal option between the posts.
According to the report, Chelsea initially opened talks with an offer of €40 million, but Porto's unwillingness to budge from the release clause left a €20 million gap between the two sides. However, recent developments suggest Chelsea are now willing to close that gap and pay the full fee. Bayern Munich and PSG have also been linked with the player, though Chelsea are said to hold a clear advantage in the race.
Current goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has faced criticism for costly errors at key moments, while Filip Jorgensen is also reportedly keen to leave the club. Costa, under contract with Porto until 2030 and the league leader in save percentage (80%) in Portugal's top flight last season, is also noted for his distribution skills, which suit Alonso's style of play. Porto remain unwilling to offer any discount, believing Costa's value will only rise further following his World Cup showing.
