A major development at Arsenal appears to have opened an unexpected window of opportunity for Chelsea. With Bruno Guimaraes joining from Newcastle United for £75 million, questions have arisen over the midfield role of Martin Zubimendi, who signed for Arsenal from Real Sociedad for €70 million last summer. According to the report, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has openly communicated his interest in the Spanish player, whom he has long admired, to club officials.
It's noted that Alonso knows Zubimendi closely from his time coaching Real Sociedad's B team, with the player himself having described Alonso as an "idol." According to journalist Simon Phillips, Alonso has informed club management of his desire to complete a deal for Zubimendi before the summer transfer window closes. However, it's stressed that Arsenal are unlikely to be willing to part with a player they only signed last year so soon, and are expected to reject any offers that come in.
Zubimendi, 27, who played all 38 Premier League matches last season, contributing five goals and playing a key role in Arsenal's title triumph, is said to be at risk of losing his place alongside Declan Rice following Guimaraes' arrival. Real Madrid are also said to be among the clubs monitoring the player, though Chelsea's management have not yet submitted a formal offer and could postpone any move until 2027 should his role diminish this season.
