Chelsea have officially confirmed the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton and Hove Albion. The club's statement read: "Chelsea is delighted to announce the signing of Danny Welbeck from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion." The striker, capped 42 times by England, has signed a contract running until 2028 and joins Xabi Alonso's squad.
The move marks a clear departure from Chelsea's youth-focused transfer strategy under BlueCo ownership. Since the 2022 takeover, the club has largely prioritised players under 25 — indeed, the oldest starting player in last week's preseason friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers was just 23. The last time Chelsea paid a transfer fee for a player over the age of 26 was four years ago, when they signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Welbeck, who posted the best return of his career last season with 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances for Brighton, said following the move: "When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it's something that fills you with such immense pride. Knowing the history of Chelsea, it's a club that wants to win trophies and is pushing to do that every single season." The experienced forward, who has also represented Manchester United and Arsenal, becomes the latest addition to Alonso's squad this summer, following Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra and Geovany Quenda.
