Cherki moment: France staff deny any tension

After France's 3-0 win over Sweden to reach the last 16 in the World Cup Round of 32, Rayan Cherki became a talking point. Moments in which he appeared to ignore Deschamps' offered handshake at the end of the match were viewed millions of times on social media. But the France staff denied these interpretations, saying there had been no tension within the group.

According to reports, Cherki's reaction was not an attitude directed at the manager but a frustration stemming from his inability to make an impact after coming on. The player wanted to make a difference when he took the field and prove his place in the team, but he could not do so. The 22-year-old Manchester City player made four substitute appearances at the tournament for a total of around 51-55 minutes; against Sweden he was on the pitch for only five minutes.

According to reports, the staff is aware that the player is currently going through a difficult personal period and that this could weigh on his state of mind; for this reason they want to protect Cherki. Indeed, the player smiled again on the evening of the match and celebrated the qualification with his teammates. Official comments underlined that there is no problem between the player and the manager.

Cherki's frustration over playing time once again showed how competitive the places in the France squad are. However, the team's flawless group performance — four wins in four matches — also backs up the manager's choices. France will face Paraguay in the last 16 on July 4.
