De Zerbi Approves Gakpo: Tottenham Step Up

Tottenham have moved on one of the summer's most eye-catching attacking pursuits. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club has made contact with the agency representing Liverpool's Dutch star Cody Gakpo. Romano said: "Cody Gakpo is a target for Tottenham. I've been mentioning this name several times — I told you to keep an eye on Gakpo because he's a target for Tottenham. They've had contacts with the agency representing Gakpo. Tottenham like the player and believe he could be the right addition for Roberto De Zerbi. Now it depends on the price."

According to the report, Liverpool have no intention of selling Gakpo and are very happy with him internally. Romano added: "Liverpool are not pushing Gakpo out, Liverpool are very happy with Cody Gakpo. So the only way to change the story and let Gakpo go to Tottenham is if Liverpool open the door — but even during the World Cup and throughout July, Liverpool were insisting on keeping Gakpo." Anthony Gordon's roughly £69 million move from Newcastle to Barcelona is said to have set a similar benchmark, meaning Liverpool would likely demand at least £70 million.

Gakpo, under contract with Liverpool until 2030 and who registered seven goals and five assists in 36 league appearances last season, fits the versatile profile De Zerbi is seeking thanks to his ability to play on the left wing, through the middle, or as a centre-forward. Tottenham are also closely tracking Manchester City's Savinho, but the club is reportedly keen to push through both additions rather than settle for just one reinforcement. Liverpool's stance is only expected to shift if a very substantial financial offer arrives.
