Denzel Dumfries is Real Madrid's new right-back

Long anticipated, it is now official: Real Madrid have announced the signing of Inter's Dutch star Denzel Dumfries. The Spanish giants confirmed that the 30-year-old right-back has signed for four seasons, until June 30, 2030. The transfer was completed through the release clause inserted into the contract Dumfries renewed with Inter in November 2024, which dropped from 25 to 20 million euros this summer.

In truth, the operation had been wrapped up weeks ago. Dumfries passed his medical in early June while on duty at the Netherlands' national-team camp, with the official announcement held back until after July 1 for financial-planning reasons. The signing is known to have been a direct request from Jose Mourinho, the club's new head coach. The Dutchman becomes Real Madrid's fourth major addition of the summer, following Cucurella, Konaté and Bernardo Silva, and will compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right flank vacated by the legendary Carvajal.

For Inter, the chapter that closes was a genuine success story. Signed from PSV for around 14 million euros in 2021, Dumfries made 207 appearances for the Milan club, contributing 27 goals and 28 assists while winning two Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia crowns and three Italian Super Cups, and reaching two Champions League finals. His legendary two-goal, one-assist display in the 2025 semifinal against Barcelona will never be forgotten. The Nerazzurri bank a net profit of more than 18 million euros from the sale.

With the Netherlands eliminated on penalties by Morocco in the World Cup round of 32, Dumfries now turns his focus fully to Madrid, where his power, aerial presence and driving runs into the box make him a candidate to become one of the key men in Mourinho's rebuilt side.
