Favourites Portugal drew 1-1 with DR Congo to drop major points in 2026 FIFA World Cup Group K. At the NRG Stadium in Houston, Portugal — among the strongest title contenders — could not win despite 75% possession, while DR Congo produced a historic act of resistance.
Portugal started fast and went ahead in the 6th minute: from a Pedro Neto assist, João Neves found the net to make it 1-0. But DR Congo levelled in first-half stoppage time. In the 45+5th minute, Yoane Wissa made it 1-1 from an Arthur Masuaku assist to send the game level into the break.
The second half ended goalless. Despite overwhelming possession (75%) and far more presence in the opposition box, Portugal could not break down DR Congo's disciplined defence. Curiously, DR Congo edged the expected goals (xG) 0.82 to 0.69 and led on big chances 1-0, showing how effective the African side were on the counter.
Roberto Martínez pushed for a winner in the second half, bringing on attackers such as Conceição, Leão and Ramos, but the result did not change. With Cristiano Ronaldo also featuring, Portugal failed to get what they wanted despite their star-laden squad.
Refereed by Qatar's Abdulrahman Al-Jassim and watched by more than 68,000 fans, the match saw DR Congo take a valuable point against a favourite on their first World Cup appearance since 1974. After Spain's draw with Cape Verde, the result again highlighted the rise of African teams at the tournament. For Portugal, the group campaign has started tougher than expected.
