Egypt drew 1-1 with Iran on the third matchday of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, a result that took them through the group phase for the first time in their history. At Lumen Field in Seattle, both sides pushed for goals, but the net was not troubled again after the interval.

Egypt made the brighter start. In the fifth minute, Mahmoud Saber latched onto the ball in front of the goalkeeper to put his side 1-0 ahead. Iran were then handed a golden chance to level in the 11th minute, but Mehdi Taremi failed to convert from the penalty spot. The visitors did not let their heads drop, however, and Ramin Rezaeian made it 1-1 in the 14th minute.

Early in the first half, Egypt were forced into a defensive reshuffle when Mohamed Abdelmonem went off injured. The opening 45 minutes turned physical, with bookings on both sides.

The second half saw both teams create openings without altering the scoreline. The most decisive moment came in the 90+3rd minute, when an Iran goal was ruled out for offside, ending the visitors' hopes of a winner. Tempers and cards flared on both sides during stoppage time.

A light glance at the statistics reveals a balanced but contrasting picture. Egypt led possession with 61% and edged the shot count 15-12, yet the expected goals (xG) read 1.82 to 0.82 in Iran's favour, and Iran also led the big-chance count 3-0. In short, Egypt dictated more of the play, while Iran fashioned the more dangerous openings.

Refereed by Poland's Szymon Marciniak and watched by 66,925 spectators, the match ended in a historic result for Egypt. Reaching the knockout phase for the first time in their fourth World Cup appearance, Egypt opened a new chapter at the tournament. Iran, meanwhile, were not eliminated; with their hopes still alive in the race among the best third-placed teams, their fate now rests on results in other groups.

For Egypt, this draw carries symbolic weight beyond the result; a side that had long failed to escape the group reached their goal through resilience at a crucial moment. For Iran, the disallowed goal and the clear chances they failed to take left them departing the pitch with a bittersweet draw.
