Egypt advance for the first time; Iran still in the hunt

Egypt drew 1-1 with Iran on the third matchday of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, a result that took them through the group phase for the first time in their history. At Lumen Field in Seattle, both sides pushed for goals, but the net was not troubled again after the interval.

Egypt made the brighter start. In the fifth minute, Mahmoud Saber latched onto the ball in front of the goalkeeper to put his side 1-0 ahead. Refereed by Poland's Szymon Marciniak and watched by 66,925 spectators, the match ended in a historic result for Egypt. Reaching the knockout phase for the first time in their fourth World Cup appearance, Egypt opened a new chapter at the tournament. Iran, meanwhile, were not eliminated; with their hopes still alive in the race among the best third-placed teams, their fate now rests on results in other groups.
