Australia and Egypt met in the World Cup Round of 32. In a contest that ended 1-1 after normal time and extra time, the tie was decided on penalties. Establishing a 4-2 advantage over their opponents in the shootout, Egypt came away winners and booked their place in the last 16.
Egypt found the first goal of the match. Going 1-0 ahead through Emam Ashour's goal in the 13th minute, Egypt completed the first half ahead by that score. In the second half, Australia found the goal they were looking for. In the 55th minute, an own goal by Mohamed Hany made the score 1-1 and restored the balance in the contest.
Although both teams battled to gain the upper hand in the remaining minutes, normal time ended 1-1. There was no goal in the extra-time periods either, and the score did not change. Thus the tie moved to a penalty shootout, which would decide who advanced. The shootout was the stage for great tension for both teams.
In the shootout, Mohamed Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah and Hossam Abdelmaguid converted for Egypt. On the Australia side, the penalties taken by Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington could not be converted. Completing the sequence 4-2 ahead, Egypt came away winners and advanced to the last 16. Australia, meanwhile, were eliminated at this stage despite their effort and bowed out of the World Cup.
