Egypt-Iran goal duel: 1-1 at the break

Egypt and Iran shared the spoils at half-time, the opening 45 minutes finishing 1-1 on the third matchday of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage. The clash at Lumen Field in Seattle delivered early goals and a missed penalty.

Egypt made the brighter start. In the fifth minute, Mahmoud Saber latched onto the ball in front of the goalkeeper and finished to put his side 1-0 ahead. The early breakthrough did little to unsettle Iran, who quickly settled and began to threaten.

In the 11th minute, Iran were handed a golden chance to level. Mehdi Taremi stepped up to take a penalty but failed to convert, and the opportunity went begging. The miss did not knock Iran off course, however. Three minutes later, Ramin Rezaeian found the net to make it 1-1 and restore parity.

Another notable moment of the half came on the Egyptian side. In the 14th minute, Mohamed Abdelmonem was forced off through injury and replaced by Yasser Ibrahim, an early reshuffle that obliged Egypt to adjust their defensive setup.

The remainder of the half grew physical, with bookings on both sides. Kanaani and Nemati went into referee Szymon Marciniak's book for Iran, while Saber and Ibrahim were cautioned for Egypt. The match, officiated by the Polish referee, turned into a fiercely contested midfield battle.

The statistics paint an intriguing picture of the balance on the pitch. Egypt enjoyed a clear edge in possession with 62% and edged the total shot count 8-6. Yet the expected goals (xG) data tell a different story: Iran created the sharper openings with an xG of 1.18 and three big chances, while Egypt's xG stood at just 0.31, with no big chances created. In short, Egypt held the ball more, but Iran were the more dangerous side in front of goal.

The closing minutes belonged to Egyptian pressure. In the 45+4th minute, Mahmoud Saber tried a fierce long-range effort that flew over the bar. Around the same time, Mohamed Hany's cross into the box was dealt with as the Iranian defence rose higher than the forwards to clear the danger. The referee's whistle brought the first half to a close at 1-1.

The second half hinges on whether Egypt can turn their possession into goals, and whether Iran can keep converting their limited chances so efficiently.
